The Bloomfield River is a mighty rainforest river which changes its character throughout the year and seasons. During the summer months, the river can become swollen by the monsoonal deluge, with the water rising up to 5m. The muddy waters race down the mountains and sweep out to sea. For the rest of the year, it’s a more predictable and steady flow of clear, green water which rises and falls with the tides. Experience the Bloomfield River for yourselves on a half-day guided tour.
Make sure you bring your cameras, as we will be on the look out for some of the many resident saltwater crocodiles. There’s quite a few that live in the Bloomfield River, between the bridge and the river mouth, ranging in size and character. We usually see them sunning themselves on the riverbank, headlands near the river mouth and even on trees and rocks that overhang or emerge from the water. Your guide will point them out while also providing an informative commentary on the local European history, events and characters.
The half-day guided Bloomfield River tours are available on request and minimum numbers do apply. These are small group tours, which are usually just you and your friends or family. The timing is tide dependent, as the river system can be shallow in some places depending on the season.
These tours are usually booked by guests staying with us at Bloomfield Escape, but can also be provided to other visitors travelling through with advance notice required.
What will you see? Well, it’s a natural environment so there’s no guarantees, but we usually do see saltwater crocodiles, a number of seabirds, fish and sometimes turtles. The tour starts and ends at the Bloomfield River boat ramp. It takes you up to the bridge and back again, including a section of mangroves. Water is provided and you are welcome to bring your own snacks.
The Bloomfield River tours are half day trips. Exact timing is tide and weather dependent, check with us when booking. Please note advance bookings are essential. Call (07) 4060 8346 or bloomfieldescape@bigpond.com
